In 2025, more than half of the entering freshmen were ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school classes, and the freshman class averaged 1308 on the critical reading and math sections of the SAT.

The University is committed to the success of its students. For the fall 2025 class, Clemson’s student retention rate was 93 percent. Much of this is due to the Academic Success Center (ASC), which is recognized nationally and internationally for its programs in collegiate learning.

The ASC is housed in a 35,000-square-foot facility where it offers free one-on-one tutoring services for more than 80 courses as well as for additional courses as the need arises. Peer-Assisted Learning, academic skills workshops, and academic coaching are also available free to all Clemson students.

Clemson has also received national recognition for its innovative Communication Across the Curriculum (CAC) program, which makes writing across all curriculums a priority. At Clemson, CAC has become a standard teaching method used in nearly every department to provide real-life challenges that require students to think and communicate effectively.

From cheering on the Tigers at a football game to socializing at the Hendrix Student Center, Clemson students can participate in a wide variety of activities outside the classroom. What you Must Know About the Application Process

In 2025, the University received about 28,884 applications for a fall freshman class of 3,796.

For freshman applicants, the following factors are considered: class standing, standardized test scores (SAT or ACT), high school curriculum, grades and choice of major.

All entering freshmen must have completed 4 credits of English, 3 credits of mathematics, 3 credits of laboratory science, 3 credits of a foreign language (in the same language), 3 credits of social sciences, 1 credit of U.S. history, 1 credit of physical education or ROTC, and 1 credit of fine arts.

To be considered for transfer admission, candidates must have completed a full year of college study (a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of transferable work), earned a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (3.0 preferred) and completed freshman-level courses in English, science, and mathematics for their intended major at Clemson.

Application deadlines for freshman admission are December 1 (priority date for fall semester), May 1 (fall semester) and December 15 (spring semester). For transfer admissions, the application deadlines are July 1 (fall semester) and December 15 (spring semester).

How to Apply: Clemson University

Incoming Freshmen

Follow these Procedures

When applying, freshman applicants should:

• Fill out the online application.
• Send an official high school transcript with senior year courses listed.
• Request official SAT or ACT scores to be sent directly from the testing agency. If you submit old SAT scores (from tests administered before March 2025), Clemson will convert the old SAT decision scores (critical reading/math/writing) into new SAT sections (evidence-based reading and writing/math). The overall total SAT score will then be derived by taking the highest of the evidence-based reading and writing/math scores. For your ACT scores, the best composite score will be taken.

Other application considerations:

• An audition is required for students interested in pursuing music or theater concentrations. For more information, visit the performing arts department website.
• Applications for PGA Golf Management must demonstrate evidence of a playing proficiency reflected in a handicap of eight or better. Each student’s handicap must be verified by a member of the PGA or by a high school golf coach. For more information, visit the PGA Golf Management website.

Interviews are not required for admission, but you can learn more about the Clemson experience by visiting with an admissions staff member. Appointments are not required, but you can call the office at 864-656-2287 to schedule one if you would like.

Admission is closed when all class space has been committed. We encourage applicants to submit materials early in the fall of their senior year. In mid-February, decisions are mailed to students who applied before Dec. 1; students who applied after Dec. 1 will receive their decision at this time or shortly thereafter. After you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation email.

Transfer Student

Follow these Procedures

When applying to transfer into Clemson, you should:

• Submit an online application.
• Request final official transcripts to be sent to the office of Undergraduate Admissions from each college previously attended. You must submit official transcripts even if you do not expect to receive credit for the work or if you withdrew before receiving final grades. If you have been provisionally accepted, you must also arrange for Clemson to receive updated transcripts for any additional work you complete.

Transfer Student Application Timeline

Transfer applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as they become complete. Admissions are closed when all classroom space has been committed.

December 1: Deadline to apply for spring admissions (January enrollment). All official documents (except those for your current term) must be postmarked by December 15.

March 1: Deadline to submit the FAFSA for need-based scholarships for the fall semester.

April 1: Deadline to submit the FAFSA for loans and grants for the fall semester.

July 1: Final deadline to apply for fall admission.

Note: Transfer students who wish to apply for Maymester or Summer Sessions should submit their application at least two weeks before classes begin.

Requirements:

Transfer admission is becoming increasingly more competitive. Transfer applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as they become complete, and admission is closed when all classroom space has been committed.

To improve your chance for admission you should:

1. Complete a year of college study — after high school graduation — earning 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of transferable credit. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Dual Enrollment credit may not be used to count toward the 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) requirement.

1. • NOTE: Consideration for transfer with fewer than 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) is possible, but the applicant must also submit a high school transcript and test scores (SAT or ACT). High school performance will be reviewed first, and a strong high school GPA, class rank and standardized test score are necessary. College academic performance is also required and will be reviewed, in addition to high school information. Must meet freshmen admission requirements.

2. Earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale — 3.0 preferred.
3. Complete freshmen-level courses in English, science, and mathematics for your intended major at Clemson University.
4. Must be in good standing and eligible to return to the institution last attended.

Apply early and contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for current admission requirements The opportunity to change into one of these majors upon enrollment at Clemson cannot be guaranteed.

There are specific majors at Clemson that are more competitive due to grade point average requirements and/or space limitations. Students interested in one of these majors listed below will need to select the second choice of major on your application to allow more flexibility in the review process.

Application Requirements:

Applicants for both freshman and transfer admission must submit the following:

• Application form with an application-processing fee, drawn from either a U.S. bank or a U.S. dollar account.
• Scores from the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or American College Testing (ACT).
• Official TOEFL or IELTS scores. English proficiency is measured through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
  
  TOEFL (code: 5111): Internet-Based — 80 or higher. Paper-Based — 550 or higher
  
  IELTS (code: 5111): -6.5 or higher (minimum of 6.0 in each sub-score)
  
  DuoLingo: 105 or higher
  
  Note: Transfer applicants attending U.S. institutions who have passed English composition courses I and II that are equivalent to Clemson University’s ENGL 1030 with a grade of “B” or better are exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement. The test can also be waived for students from countries where English is the primary language or one of the official languages.
• Official transcripts or mark sheets sent directly from all high school(s), preparatory school(s) and/or collegiate institutions attended, including official English translations and U.S. grading equivalents when applicable.
• Verified transcript/mark sheet/academic record.

Application Deadlines:

• All requested application credentials must be at Clemson University by May 1 for August entry or Oct. 1 for January entry.
• Issuance of I-20 or DS-2025 must be at Clemson by June 1 for August entry or Nov. 1 for January entry.
• Class registration happens in the third week of August for August entry or the first week of January for January entry. (Financial penalties apply for late registration.)

Applications for both freshman and transfer admission are reviewed after all required information is received.

• The first step is to fill out Clemson’s online application.
• Candidates must request that all test scores be forwarded directly to Clemson. A personal copy or a copy from another source is considered unofficial.

Immigration Requirements

When academic, language and financial abilities are certified, the Office of Global Engagement will issue an I-20 or DS-2025 (Certificate of Eligibility). This document is to be taken to a U.S. Consulate to apply for a nonimmigrant student visa.

Form DS-2025 (J-1 exchange visitor visa certificate) is usually issued to students who are funded by their home government or by an international organization. If no organizational sponsor is involved, an I-20 (F-1 student visa certificate) will be issued. Students are responsible for maintaining legal status with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during their studies.

International students who are transferring from another school in the U.S. will be issued visa documents at the time of their enrollment at Clemson University. If the transfer student plans to leave the United States for a brief visit to his/her home country before coming to Clemson, the student must notify the Office of Global Engagement of this intention before departing the U.S.

Health Insurance

The University requires international students, their spouses, and dependents living in the United States to have a minimum of $50,000 in health insurance coverage including medical evacuation and repatriation. Health insurance is available through the University. An insurance waiver for existing comparable insurance is coordinated through Redfern Health Center.

Student Services

The Office of Global Engagement serves international students on campus. It shares responsibility for processing all international acceptances and serves as a liaison between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and all internationals on campus.
